Controversial….but…It is common to hear Counsellors & Therapists stating that they “don’t need to be online” …..and they couldn’t be further from the truth.

Business Coaching for Counsellors

Counselling and Therapy have always been professions that have relied greatly on word of mouth for acquiring clients. In the past, a practitioner’s reputation was built through their interactions with clients and colleagues, and their work spoke for itself. However, with the advent of the internet, things have changed rapidly. Social media and digital marketing have become critical components of any business’s strategy, and Counselling and Therapy practices are no exception.

Despite the tremendous advantages of the online world for businesses, many Counsellors and Therapists remain hesitant about embracing digital marketing channels. It is common to hear professionals in these communities stating that they “don’t need to be online,” that “social media is for kids,” or that “word of mouth works best for me.” Such outdated views are quite common, and many Counsellors and Therapists are still reluctant to fully embrace the enormous potential of the digital world.

However, these outdated views can have serious consequences for Counsellors and Therapists. As the online world evolves at a rate of knots, it has become impossible to ignore the potential that online marketing channels offer for Counselling and Therapy practices. Indeed, the new wave of green Counsellors that will soon enter the workforce will have grown up in a fully digital world. They will be highly attuned to the capabilities and limitations of the digital world and will be more comfortable than their more seasoned peers in using digital channels such as social media to engage clients.

Therefore, regardless of their reservations, Counsellors and Therapists must embrace the online world if they plan to stay competitive in the market and remain relevant in the field. It is essential to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to use online marketing channels effectively, as it can help you attract more clients, build your brand, and position yourself as an expert in your field.

This shift to digital does not mean abandoning the professional values of confidentiality and privacy that are critical to Counselling and Therapy practices. Instead, it is about finding ways to leverage the benefits of online marketing channels without jeopardising the trust that clients put in their Counsellors and Therapists.

Fortunately, learning the fundamentals of online marketing is not as difficult as many Counsellors and Therapists believe it to be. Just like learning to drive a car or performing online banking, Counsellors and Therapists can develop the essential skills necessary to take advantage of the digital world. Some key skills include developing a strong digital presence, using social media to engage with clients, and creating valuable content that positions them as trusted experts in the field.

In conclusion, Counsellors and Therapists must recognise the benefits of the digital world and embrace online marketing channels to remain competitive and successful in their fields. The new generation of green Counsellors will already have developed this skill set, and traditional Counsellors and Therapists must follow suit to retain their competitive edge. By developing the necessary skills and knowledge, Counsellors and Therapists can use online channels to reach a wider audience, build their brand, and attract more clients. The evolution of the online world is inevitable, and it is time for Counsellors and Therapists to embrace it.
