Private Practice Marketing for Counsellors and Therapists

Marketing that reflects the standards you hold in the therapy room

You’re a Therapist not a Marketer.

You care deeply about how you work, what you say and the responsibility that comes with helping people.

Yet much of the marketing advice aimed at therapists feels completely disconnected from those standards.

No wonder marketing can feel uncomfortable.

I’m Mel Lay.

I help counsellors and therapists build private practices through marketing that understands both sides of the equation: the depth and responsibility of therapeutic work, and what it takes to build a successful business.

How do I get more clients without becoming a full-time content creator?

I guarantee you are constantly wondering:

Why isn’t my website bringing me enquiries?

How do I make my therapy practice more visible on Google?

Why isn’t my therapist directory profile getting enquiries?

How do I get more clients without constantly posting on social media?

How do I market myself without sounding salesy or becoming someone I’m not?

These aren’t simply marketing problems. They’re often a sign that the advice you’re following wasn’t designed for therapists in the first place.

Your standards in the therapy room shouldn’t disappear when you open your laptop.

You care about depth, trust, boundaries, responsibility and creating a space where someone feels safe enough to be honest.

Yet much of the marketing advice aimed at therapists tells you to:

  • post more
  • follow trends
  • create urgency
  • chase engagement
  • sound more confident
  • and somehow turn your work into content.

That disconnect is where my work begins.

Marketing advice designed for coaches, influencers or generic businesses doesn’t automatically translate to therapy.

You need marketing that understands the profession, the person behind it and the person searching for help.

That is much more ownable than “ethical marketing”.

I teach therapists how to market their Therapy business with confidence, clarity, and integrity.

Your ideal client isn’t just a demographic. They have an inner world.

They aren’t simply “women aged 35-50 with anxiety”.

They’re lying awake wondering whether what they’re feeling is normal. They’re searching Google at midnight.

They’re wondering whether therapy will actually help, whether they’ll feel judged, whether they’ll have to explain everything from the beginning, and whether someone will really understand what is going on beneath the surface.

Your marketing needs to speak to that person.

That’s why I don’t start with what you want to post. I start with understanding the person you want to reach, what they are thinking, searching, avoiding, hoping for and needing to hear before they ever contact you.

What you really need isn’t “more followers”, it’s this:

  • To know where your next enquiries are coming from, rather than constantly wondering when the next client will appear.
  • To attract the right clients consistently, instead of relying on referrals or occasional bursts of enquiries.
  • To build a private practice that gives you a reliable income, not just a diary that happens to be full this month.
  • To be confident that your website, content and visibility are actually working together to bring potential clients to you.
  • To grow a successful practice without spending all your time marketing it.

How to get more Therapy clients?

There’s plenty of advice on how to market a therapy practice.

But much of it is generic business advice, outdated, or borrowed from the coaching world.

It wasn’t designed for therapists.

My approach brings together business strategy, marketing and a deep understanding of how therapy clients actually choose a therapist.

I help you:

  • understand your ideal client beyond demographics
  • communicate what makes your work different
  • create marketing that builds trust and enquiries
  • build a website that works for both people and search
  • grow a successful private practice without becoming a full-time marketer

30+ years of business, marketing and professional experience

My background spans finance, audit, marketing, counselling and more than a decade of building successful businesses.

I’ve also spent years working specifically with counsellors and therapists, so I understand the difference between building a business and building a therapy practice.

You need a strategy that connects the whole picture:

Your positioning. Your website. Your content. Your visibility. Your ideal clients.

So your marketing isn’t just getting seen, it’s getting you found by the people who are looking for the work you do.

When your marketing is done properly, you don’t feel salesy.

You feel certain.

And that certainty changes everything because you will begin to notice:

  • regular, qualified enquiries year-round
  • fewer price shoppers and mis-fit clients
  • calmer decisions around fees and boundaries
  • a website and online presence that actually sounds like you
  • less time chasing, more time doing meaningful work
  • the option to create waitlists or additional income streams
  • a business that supports your life, not consumes it

Most importantly:

You stop feeling like you’re “trying to market”
and start feeling like a respected professional with a clear voice.

This isn’t about become louder, salesy or needing to be someone else.

You simply need clarity, structure, and the right language to express the depth that’s already there.

When that clicks, everything else gets easier.

If you’re ready to feel more certain, more visible, and more respected in your work, I’d love to support you.

About Mel Lay

I’m a Business & Marketing coach for therapists – but I didn’t come through the usual coaching route.

I spent 15 years working in corporate finance as an accountant and Police Authority auditor, before taking a leap and moving abroad to start a wellness coaching business. It took off far quicker than I expected, and before long I’d naturally pivoted into business coaching – blending my strategic, financial and people-first skills to help others grow businesses that actually work. That was over a decade ago, and I’ve been coaching ever since, with consistent success.

Along the way, I also trained as a counsellor – and that’s where I spotted a huge gap. Most therapists are never taught how to market themselves. Not in a way that’s ethical, not in a way that reflects the work they do, and definitely not in a way that gets them consistently found by the right clients.

So now, I specialise in helping therapists grow confident, fully booked private practices using emotionally intelligent, ethical marketing. I combine deep psychographic insight, sharp business strategy, and a strong understanding of what it means to be in this industry – helping you build a business that reflects your values, fills your diary, and allows you to work in a way that’s sustainable, meaningful, and profitable.
